Agriculture and Food Security
In Upper Nyakach, the area where we work, there is a dangerously low supply of food available during the dry season. High gas and energy prices worldwide also result in high local food prices. These and other factors are worsening an already insecure food situation. Agriculture Program The food security sub-committee seeks to ensure that throughout the year there is an adequate amount of quality food. An agriculture professional from the village is utilizing a demonstration plot to provide village members with practical training on cultivating short- and long-term crops as well as techniques for dry season planting. He also encourages the community to utilize all land available to them and to plant a diverse kitchen garden. Based on his knowledge of local soil composition and which vegetables grow best in this climate, the villagers are provided with appropriate seeds and cuttings. Poultry Project Another upcoming and exciting project within the food security program is the poultry project. This project is being coordinated by two agriculture professionals from the village. Eventually village members will be able to purchase eggs and chickens at a subsidized price to supplement their meals. Extra eggs and chickens can be sold in nearby towns to generate income and meet other needs in the community. Nutrition Nutrition is a key factor in healthy living. At school, children learn the importance of having a balanced diet and the structure of the Food Guide Pyramid. The practical application of this, however, is a challenge when varieties and quantities of food are not readily available. The Food Security sub-committee is currently researching the nutritional values of local foods and recipes that can easily bring variety to anyone’s diet. This program is still in its beginning stages but will undoubtedly make an impact on the health of the community. | ProgramsEconomic DevelopmentEducationFood Security / AgriPreventative HealthSpiritual Development |
