Preventative Health- information, behavior change, early treatment.

Picture

Good health means a person can lead an active life and have greater opportunities to meet their potential. For this reason, good health plays a large role in community development.

Cancer of the cervix, and esophagus can be prevented and treated early with encouraging results. Lack of information and preventative knowledge has curtailed efforts to reduce the impact. The poor who live in rural areas, and NOT informed about these diseases and are the greatest victims.

Our preventative approach started with information, education, and communication awareness sessions for breast cancer, taught self exam, and facilitated early treatment . We have since extended our outreach to include cervical cancer, esophageal cancer, blood pressure screening. We recruit patients and work with partners to offer early treatment services such as cryotherapy.

Our preventative health outreach includes education sessions, focusing on behavior changes. It also includes the organic gardening project

Cancer Treatment and Care Services in Kenya
Even though cancer treatment is improving in the developed world In Kenya, unfortunately, these advances are yet to be realized, owing to an underlying deficiency of resources, infrastructure, and trained personnel; the entire lack of, or prohibitive cost of chemotherapy drugs; and the advanced stage of the majority of cancers at the time of presentation.
Most oncology specialists in Kenya are located in Nairobi, making it almost impossible for the largest number of the population to access their services. The only functional radiotherapy services are also in Nairobi, one in the referral hospital (KNH) and the others in a major private hospital that are very expensive for average Kenyans. The bottom line is that it is mostly women, mostly young, who are poor and live in the rural areas, and NOT informed about breast health who are the greatest victims and highly risked with breast cancer.

Malaria Prevention
Upper Nyakach is in a region that has an alarming number of malaria cases each year; in fact, the area leads the province in malaria-related deaths. Consequently our Malaria Prevention Program comprehensively addresses the causes and effects of malaria and applies multiple preventative measures.Sleeping under an insecticide-treated net is an effective way to protect oneself against malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Treated nets are estimated to be twice as effective as untreated nets and as a whole decrease a persons risk by 70%.

In the village, Dala provided high-quality nets to community members who were without, and all other existing nets were treated with an insecticide. In addition to the nets, mosquito breeding grounds were reduced in the immediate area.
Children took an active role in removing litter and standing water from their yards, and cut down tall grass where mosquitoes like to breed.  The efforts are ongoing. Every six months nets get re-treated and replaced when needed, and standing water is removed every rainy season.
